The Words You Say

January7

Tip 252

Listen to Yourself

What are the first words you say to each other after not seeing your mate all day?

Do you speak task oriented words:

  • Did you pick the kids up?
  • Did you go by the store for me?
  • Did you put gasoline in the car?
  • Did you remember to stop by the cleaners?
  • Did you make that appointment you were supposed to make?
  • Take your shoes off; you’re going to track dirt.
  • Don’t just drop your stuff on the counter.

Do you say words of joy and delight about seeing each other:

  • Hi, honey, how was your day?
  • You look tired. Why don’t you sit down for a few minutes and relax before dinner?
  • I picked up something for dinner you’ll like.
  • I made your favorite desert for after dinner tonight.
  • I missed you today, but I miss you everyday.
  • Hey, I haven’t hugged you since this morning! How about a hug?
  • I was thinking about you today, and it was all good stuff.

If you think taking time for statements like these seems corny in your busy world when you see each other day in and day out, remember that your spouse is the most important person in the world.

Spouses need nourishment and every small thing helps to nourish your relationship.

Do your words nourish or douse your relationship? A nourished relationship is more fun and helps couples slide through the not-so-fun times.

What things do you like to hear when you haven’t seen your mate all day? What do you not like to hear? You can tell us in the comment section below.
