No Reason Not to Date

No matter what time of year it is, look at calendars for the next 12 months (6 months if you can’t imagine making that long-term of a commitment). Discuss things with each other and mark at least one night per month that you’ll have date night.

No money for eating out and a movie? Take food from home and have a picnic. Drive or bike around town in areas you rarely see. If you live next to places with forests, trees, vegetation, mountains, lakes, ocean, beautiful architecture, parks, fields of vegetables or grains growing, landscapes of cactus–well, you get the idea—just get out and enjoy nature or man-made creations and the beauty they bring. Take a long, quiet stroll in the park—or at the local mall—or at the local grocery store parking lot with all the lights.

Make one weekend per quarter that you will do something as a couple for a weekend. Have kids? Kids love to stay a night with friends and having them stay for a Saturday night gives you all of Saturday and Sunday. Choose different nights if that’s better.

Can’t afford a weekend trip away every 3 months? Save up for it. Put a tiny bit of money away to save for those weekends. OK, we’ve been there, done that. It’s not that easy to put money back if there’s hardly money to pay for bills and all the necessary things of life. No problem.

If you can’t afford to get away once a quarter, then make plans of how to enjoy your two days and one night in your very own home—alone. No extra expense at all—just a weekend of fun and relaxation and focus on each other. NO laundry or cleaning or working on hobbies—unless you are doing hobbies together. This is your time to remind each other why you loved each other in the first place.

Trade off the two days and one night of your kids staying with friends. Keep theirs so they can have a weekend every quarter, too.
