Laughter Is the Best Medicine

Tip # 86

Laughing Is Serious Business

Probably the first time that most of us became aware of the benefits of laughter was through Norman Cousins’ book, Anatomy of an Illness. Cousins discovered that if he laughed for just 10 minutes, he could get 2 hours of restful sleep from a painful spinal condition. Having fun and laughter help relieve stress hormones.

Scientists aren’t completely sure why laughter helps in so many areas of the body, but there are too many reports that show it does help to disregard all the evidence. Laughing also helps put more tension reducing oxygen into the blood. Scientists also say that laughter reduces blood sugar levels, increases blood flow, helps the immune system, and helps provide pain-free sleep.  Check out this article on WebMd for Woman to find some of the beneficial effects of laughing:

Somehow, laughing creates a joy that is hard to explain. To help you and your spouse find more laughter, get your own collection of old funny movies. What makes something funny to one person, however, another may not see the humor at all. What is called funny is a personal taste.
