Candlelight to Set the Mood

 Tip # 44

Candles, Candles, Candles in Every Room

For a nice, quiet, relaxed evening for just the two of you, use candlelight to set the mood—it’s so inviting. If you don’t worry about the danger of candles, have several burning in every room when it’s safe (no kids, pets, drafts, or curtains nearby). It may look like a shrine with candles everywhere, but it’s fun.

However, I became much more cautious of candles years ago when one “caught fire.” The petroleum must not have been the right proportion–I’d bought it at a discount store. The candle literally flared up and I could not blow it out. It was in a ceramic holder; I grabbed pot holders to rush it outside. I poured the hot wax but it still burned in a pool of wax on the concrete for a few minutes. Very scary!

I still love the aura of candles (and will only buy high quality candles), but now I use mostly safe alternatives: flameless candles. Many types of stores carry a myriad of these battery operated candles. I have several with automatic timers which give off a faint vanilla scent.

Now, I never worry how many I have “burning” or if I might forget to “blow out” the flame. They turn off automatically and there is no flame.
