Morning Grumpiness

May20

Tip # 20

Wake to Something Pleasant

If you can, program yourselves to wake automatically at the proper time in the mornings. If that doesn’t work, then try a couple of other options, but whatever you do, wake to something pleasant to help avoid morning grumpiness.

Some people never think about what they use to wake themselves in the mornings; a traditional alarm clock is all they’ve used. However, if you do some planning, you  might help yourself and your spouse to get up in better moods each morning.

The most common is to set your alarm to music instead of a blaring, siren-induced clanging cacophony that jars you awake. No one likes to be jolted out of sleep. Being jarred out of sleep is one of the surest ways to guarantee a bad mood in the morning. Trouble  is, it takes some people until noon to shake that bad mood.

Music can be great to wake to, but another artificial way to wake and  protect your mood in the mornings is to try one of the sun brightening “alarm clocks.” They are a bit pricey, but what a wonderful way to wake gently as the light progressively gets lighter. You feel like you are naturally waking up to a cheerful, sunny day.

If you wake like an angry bear every morning or your spouse seems like spring came too early and hibernation wasn’t over yet, then seek alternatives to clangs, gongs, buzzers, and screeches in the morning. Your mood and marriage relationship will thank you.

Just a side note: I hadn’t really thought about waking moods when our kids were young. In looking back I guess I wasn’t very kind to our daughter. Smurf was the rage at that time, and we bought her a Smurf clock. Instead of an alarm beeping in the morning, at the pre-set hour her clock literally shrieked in a high pitched Smurf voice, “Wake up. Wake up. It’s time to get up in the morning! Wale Up. Wake Up!”
