Wedding Vows

Tip # 13

For Better or (Mostly) Worse

It seems like many people feel “for better or worse” in the marriage vows means, “we’re married so I can act and dress and look as slouchy as I want.”

Pre-marriage? Both people in the relationship usually try to look their best. Yet, practically the day after the wedding ceremony what happens? Baggy sweatpants, stained T-shirts, slouched posture, ragged appearance—“But we’re married now. It’s OK for me to look however I want to look. What’s appearance got to do with wedded bliss?”

Really?

Of course people want to be comfortable, but men and women don’t have to forsake looking neat for the sake of comfort. You’d think that being married meant the fairy godmother wacked you on the head and turned you into a toad.

In my opinion, it’s one of the biggest mysteries of humankind. Why the big switch in how people look between pre-marriage and after-the-wedding? If you are doing yard work in 122 degree heat or installing a septic tank or scrubbing floors on your hands and knees, wear the grubbies. However, most people aren’t doing chores like this everyday.

Come to think of it, haven’t you seen people who are newly divorced who all of a sudden improve their appearance?  That’s an interesting observation. . . .

Doesn’t your marriage partner deserve your best?
